ALBEMARLE POSTS RECORD PROFITS ON HIGHER VOLUMES AND SELLING PRICES

Albemarle reported first-quarter net income of $106.6 million, up 68% from the same period last year, on sales up 20%, to $696.5 mil- lion. Earnings of $1.15/share far exceeded the consensus of analysts' estimates of 96 cts/share, as reported by Thomson One (New York). "I am extremely pleased with our performance this quarter as we achieved our highest quarterly earnings and Ebitda in the company's history, as well as record income levels for all three of our operat- ing segments," says chairman and CEO Mark Rohr. "We continue to benefit from improving trends in the markets served by our busi- nesses and our keen focus on cost control and cash generation."
