In September 1996,1 presented a paper to the American Gas Association's Pipeline Research Committee entitled "The changing face of the Australian pipeline industry". In this paper, I began by saying: "The Australian gas pipeline industry began in 1969 using capital and technology from the United States of America. Subsequently, state and federal governments became the dominant owners and operators of most of the long distance gas pipelines, and the Australian industry adapted and developed its own technology to suit its environment.
