The article on dowel joints in the last issue of A WW described how commercially available dowel jigs and dowel centres can be used to bore precisely located and oriented dowel holes. As discussed there, these methods have their limitations. For manyjobs, my preferred option when boring dowel holes is to use multi-hole wooden jigs that I have made myself. As with commercial dowel jigs, workshop-made dowel jigs have guides that locate and align the drill bit as the dowel holes are bored, and a method of holding the guides in the correct position on the work.
