Small bowel gastrointestinal stromal tumor: an unusual cause of massive lower gastrointestinal bleeding.

Lower gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding located between the ligament of Treitz and the ileocecal valve is rare and accounts for less than 5 per cent of all lower GI bleeds. The source of bleeding in these cases can be difficult to assess with current diagnostic tools as a result of their location. Life-threatening massive lower GI bleeding caused by a GI stromal tumor in the small intestine is extremely rare with only four cases reported in the literature. Recently, a previously healthy 45-year-old white male patient presented to our emergency department after passing several large bloody stools. He reported only crampy abdominal pain relieved by defecation. He denied fevers or chills, but did note recent indigestion and a single episode of hematemesis earlier that evening. His medical and surgical histories were unremarkable. He took aspirin and Advil (Pfizer, New York, NY) daily for headaches. He noted no prior episodes of gastrointestinal bleeding.
