Evonik Industries and AU Optronic (AUO; Hsinchu, Taiwan), a producer of thin-film transistorliquid crystal display panels (TFT-LCD), say they will jointly develop materials for green energy markets, including solar and lighting, and further expand production capacity at their polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) joint venture. “Above and beyond our current relationship, we are impressed by AUO’s strong capabilities in various applications and state-of-the-art manufacturing process management,” says Patrik Wohlhauser, chairman of the Evonik Degussa business. “Our main goal to establish the joint development program in Taiwan with AUO is to open up new application markets. To this end, we’re contributing our expertise in lightweight construction, solar engineering, and electro mobility,” he says. Evonik and AUO have operated the PMMA jv, Evonik Forhouse Optical Polymers, since 2008. Evonik says the jv will double PMMA capacity, to 85,000 m.t./year at its Taichung, Taiwan plant to meet growing demand for flat-screen monitors.
