AkzoNobel, Evonik break ground on German chlorine, KOH plant

AkzoNobel and Evonik Industries have broken ground on a previously announced joint-venture project to make chlorine and caustic potash (KOH) at AkzoNobel's Ibbenbüren, Germany site. The project involves construction of a membrane-cell chlor-alkali plant that is due to be onstream by the fourth quarter of 2017. All chlor-alkali production based on mercury-cell technology will be phased out in the European Union, in accordance with EU environmental legislation, by the end of 2017 and it is being replaced by plants based on membrane-cell technology.
