The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has made a $5-million equity investment in biochemical producer Amyris (Emeryville, CA) to fund research aimed at reducing the cost of leading malaria treatment artemisinin. Specifically, the money will support Amyris's efforts to increase the efficiency of yeast strains that produce artemisinin precursors artemisinic acid and amorphadiene.
