The Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP; Beijing) says that it received 119 reports on emergent environmental accidents from January to July last year, of which 70% were related to hazardous chemicals. The Chinese government is therefore, drafting a five-year plan to regulate the chemicals sector, as the location of chemical companies poses risks of chemical spills into rivers, MEP says.
