Some soils leak tooo much when irrigated

Irogation of semi-arid lands has resulted in the development of shallow watertables and soil salinisation since biblical times. Salinisation of irrigated land has also occurred this century in Australia. It follows that the potential exists for theseproblems to develop in the cotton growing areas of NSW. In the late 1980s, it was confirmed that watertables had been rising in the Macquarie Valley, and that several sources of recharge were possible. Research was carried out from 1992 to 1994 to assessthe level of recharge from irrigated cotton fields on different soils, and therefore the contribution of irrigation to rising watertables.
