Eleven new merger and acquisition (M&A) transactions were an- nounced last week, nearly three times more than the week prior. The increase in last week's deal volume refected the industry's contin- ued interest in consolidating. The week's biggest deal was the sale of Air Products' performance materials business, which produces specialty intermediates and coat- ings additives, to Evonik Industries for $3.8 billion following weeks of speculation from various reports. Another notable transaction included Total's acquisition of Saft (Bagnolet, France), a manufacturer of advanced technology batteries, for $1.08 billion.
