Shin-Etsu to Boost VCM Capacity at Shintech plant

Shin-Etsu says it plans to build a $1.1-billion vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) plant at its Plaquemine, LA integrated vinyls complex. The facility, run by the company's U.S. subsidiary Shintech, will have the capacity to produce about 800,000 m.t./year of VCM, doubling the Plaquemine complex's total VCM production capability to about 1.6 million m.t./year. Construction is expected to be complete in 2011, Shin-Etsu says. The company says it hopes to shield its polyvinyl chloride (PVC) operations from volatility of raw materials supply by increasing internal VCM production.
