Arkema to Buy Total's Coatings Resins and Photocure Resins Units

Arkema plans to acquire Total's coatings resins and photocure resins for a european dollar 550-million ($733 million) enterprise value. The deal will bolster Arkema's acrylics segment, and establish the company as a leader in the global coatings resins market. The acquisition will also "provide Arkema with new growth drivers in Asia," the company says. Arkema expects the deal to close in first-half 2011. The businesses to be acquired have combined estimated 2010 sales of european dollar 850 million, about 20% above year-ago levels. The activities will enhance Arkema's current position in the emulsions, rheology additives, fluorinated polymers, and copolymers markets. Total's businesses included in the deal are the coatings resins of Cray Valley and Cook Composite Polymers. Cray Valley operates in Europe, Asia, and South Africa; while Cook Composite Polymers exclu- sively operates in the U.S. Arkema also plans to buy the photocure resins of Sartomer, which operates in Europe, the U.S., and Asia. Arkema will become the co-leader in the global photocure resins market. The deal will enhance Arkema's downstream acrylics activities.
