A new inclusion host: an inclusion complex between a 1,3,5-triaroylbenzene host and a benzene guest stabilized by aromatic C-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds

A methoxy-functionalized C-3-symmetrical 1,3,5-triaroylbenzene derivative was prepared by cyclotrimerization of a substituted aryl ethynyl ketone. This material was found to form a stable inclusion complex with benzene in a host:guest ratio of 1:1 as revealed by X-ray crystallography.
