French court fnds Total guilty of 2009 Carling cracker explosion

Total has been found guilty and fned ?200,000 ($225,185) on Monday by a French court for a 2009 explosion at its Carling, France, petrochemical plant that killed two and injured six. A former man- ager of the plant at the time of the accident was given a one-year suspended prison sentence and fned ?20,000. "The disrespect of the procedure by feld operators was the direct cause of the explosion but was not the sole and exclusive cause," the court says, adding that the explosion would not have occurred if fame detectors that were supposed to have prevented an accident had worked properly.
