Formic acid tHCOON ,Clec,ompOSes efficientty to afford H2 and CO2 selectively in the pletehcetirf a catalytic amount of a water-soluble rhodium .aqua complex, ffthwiCp*Kbpy)(H20112(Cp&-.15eptarneth teny, boy— 22'-bipyridine) inaciveyil***4.144498-K. -Na CO, was produced in this catalyticdecompoition of HCOOH The decomposition rate reached amaximum value o pH 3.8. No deterioration of the catalyst wasabsented during the catalytic decomposition of HCOOH, and thecatalytic activity remained the same for the repeated addition of HCOOH. The rhodium-hydride complex was detected as the cata-lytic active species that undergoes efficient WO exchange withwater. When the catalytic decomposition of HCOOH was, per-formed in D20, D2 was produced selectively. Such an efficient H/Dexchange and the observation of a deuterium kinetic isotopeeffect in the catalytic decomposition of DCOOH in H20 providevaluable mechanistic insight into this efficient and-selective de-composition process.
