Aygo a-go-go: Toyota handled the bulk of the engineering work for its PSA joint-venture Aygo city car, discovers Graham Heeps of the three-year-ling development program

Eyebrows raised when, in 2001, Toyota signed an agreement with PSA Peugeot Citroen to build a new city car at Kolin, in the Czech Republic - it's rare for Japanese auto makers to co-operate with their European counterparts. So how would Toyota -famous for its stringent engineering quality standards - split the development work with a European partner? The answer is that for the most part, it didn't: three versions of this newcomer will be sold - Citroen Cl, Peugeot 107, and Toyota Aygo (pronounced "I go") -but the bulk of the engineering work was carried out by Toyota, which will account for one third of the 300,000 cars produced in Kolin each year.
