When manufacturing test rigs for engines, transmissions or chassis dynamometers with very high-performance requirements, due consideration must be given to the AC machines and drives used to control speed and torque. Merely selecting a low-inertia AC motor does not provide dynamic performance, accuracy and repeatability. How the AC motor is controlled by the drive has a primary effect on these issues. In its simplest configuration, the AC drive can be considered as a fast torque amplifier that just follows the reference changes calculated and then demanded by the test cell control system.
