Owing to their ever-increasing number and diversity, antimicrobial cationic peptides can be a valuable tool against the growing occurrence of resistant microorganisms. Their modes of action, however, remain unidentified. The antimicrobial properties of lactoferrms are partly attributed to the lactoferricins, the antimicrobial peptides that correspond to the N-terminus region of lactoferrin after pepsin cleavage of human and bovine lactoferrin.
