In recent years, there has been rapid development in the area of chemical-based sensors. While many' groups have focused on solution-phase detec-tion, Gulino et al. have pursued a different strategy by developing solid-phase, "monolayer-based" sensors. In this article, they describe the advan-tages of a rhodium-based CO sensor based on the chemical monolayerapproach. The monolayers present a high surface area for detection, do notconsume any sensing material, and circumvent the diffusion limit encoun-tered in the solution phase. As shown in Figure 1A, their synthetic "trick" isto couple the di-rhodium(II) cluster [Rh_2(N,N-dptf)_2(4-OH-PhCO_2)_2]~1(1)via its peripheral hydroxy groups to a chlorobenzyl-derivatized glasssubstrate~2
