In this article, Piehler and coworkers have reported the use of several fluoro-phore-conjugated nickel chelators that enable specifical labeling of proteins for fluorescence studies. The authors have made novel use of the known nickel-chelator nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) in this work. They have conjugated three NTA moieties to cyclara, a macrocyclic ligand, via peptide linkages (Fig. 1, left). The resulting organic frame has been further modified with various fluorophores that span the visible region (480-700 nm).
