Increasing evidence suggests that obesity and asthma are caused by similar underlying factors. Indeed, genome-wide association studies also support this idea in that: certain overlapping signals for both obesity and asthma have been observed. For example, polymorphisms in 16p11.2 have been associated with both conditions, and copy-number variations in this region have been associated with dramatically increased obesity. To determine whether inversions at 16pll.2 might also contribute to the co-occurrence of obesity and asthma, Gonzalez et al. used a recently developed genotyping technique based on SNP array data to detect the inversion in several worldwide populations.
