Genetics of Pediatric Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety disorders are the most common pediatric mental health disorders in community samples and often result in substantial distress and impairment. The prognostic significance of childhood anxiety for adolescent and adult mental health is likewise substantial. Awareness of pediatric anxiety disorders and strategies for successful treatments have advanced enormously in the past decade. As the clinical significance of childhood anxiety has been revealed, increasing efforts are underway to understand the biology, etiology and risk markers of these disorders. Given that family history of anxiety is one of the major risk for the development of pediatric anxiety disorders interest in examining the genetic basis of these disorders has also increased.
