I begin this foreword with the words of Freda Adler to provide perspective. If there was ever one diagnosis in child and adolescent psychiatry that could generate significant controversy, one topic that captured the collective conscience of our field, a clinical presentation that brought so many thought leaders of our field to research it, one topic to which it would be difficult to do justice within one issue of the Clinics, bipolar disorder is that diagnosis.
