Invista, Lanzatech advance biobased butadiene

Invista and Lanzatech (Chicago) say they have developed processes to produce biobased butadiene both directly and from precursors 1,3 butanediol and 2,3 butanediol, via gas-fermentation. The breakthrough was made possible by customizing the genetic configuration of bacteria and modeling its performance. The two companies began jointly working on gas-fermentation routes to butadiene in 2012, and they aim to commercialize the process within the next several years. Invista uses butadiene in its proprietary adiponitrile (ADN) production technologies.
