Major chemicals companies have been pressed to separate underperforming or dissimilar businesses to enable businesses that appear undervalued within a complex organization to flourish as pure plays. The strategy plays off the concept that the parts are sometimes more valuable than the whole. Much of the activity has been inspired by activist shareholders demanding that companies spin off underperforming assets. Activity has been on the rise lately, with the most notable examples taking place at DuPont and Dow Chemical.
