DOW TO BUILD PROPYLENE GLYCOL PLANT IN THAILAND

Dow Chemical says it plans to build a 150,000-m.t./year propyleneglycol (PG) plant at Map Ta Phut, Thailand. The new PG facility will use propylene oxide (PO) derived from Dow’s hydrogen peroxide to propylene oxide (HPPO) joint venture currently under construction at Map Ta Phut. Engineering and construction of the PG plant is expected to start in 2011 and will start up in 2013, the company tells CW. The HPPO plant is part of a previously announced jv liquids cracker and derivatives project among Dow, the Siam Cement Group, and Solvay Peroxythai at Map Ta Phut, and will produce 390,000 m.t./year of PO. The HPPO jv is due onstream in the second half of 2011, Dow says. The new plant will offer locally sourced PG for enhanced supply reliability, says John Smith, global business director for PO/PG at Dow. “With these investments, Dow is well-positioned long-term to strategically grow our PG franchise in the region.”
