Lanxess announced today that it is expanding its Gastonia, NC compounding facility for high-tech plastics by adding a second production line. The company will invest about $15 million to double the existing capacity from 20,000 to 40,000 m.t./year. Construction is expected to begin in the second half of the year and be completed in early 2016. The facility produces high-tech plastics Durethan polyamide and Pocan polybutylene terephthalate for automotive engineers designing lighter-weight plastic components to replace metal parts in cars. “The United States is the leading market for high-tech plastics, with the automotive industry at the forefront,” says Lanxess president and CEO Flemming Bjoernslev.
