EU rules to reduce consumption of lightweight plastic bags

The Council of the European Union says that agreement has been reached with the European Parliament on new rules aimed at reducing the consumption of plastic bags in the European Union. The objectives of the new EU-wide rules are to reduce the effects on the environment caused by littering of plastic bags, to encourage waste prevention, and to promote more efficient use of resources.
