Kawasaki Kisen To Develop LNG-Powered Car Carrier

Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. started to deveplop LNG-powered car carrier in collaboration with Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. and Nowegian Det Norske Veritas (DNV). If economically justified, a newly constructed vessel is expected to be placed in service in 2015. As for vessels using LNG as fuel, there are 26 precedents in the world such as ferries, platform supply vessels (PSV) and patrol boats. However, there have been no such LNG-powered commercial ships as Kawasaki Kisen is going to develop. This is because LNG supply infrastructure for vessels, has not been established. The three companies including Kawasaki Kisen are expected to clear these challenges and aim at the world first LNG-fuel based shipping by an ordinary commercial vessel.
