Spindle Cell Tumors of the Gastrointestinal Tract

Spindle cell tumors presenting in the gastrointestinal tract are uncommon but when they arise, arriving at the correct diagnosis is important. Performing GDI 17 testing is often encouraged by oncologists hoping to use specific biologic therapy (STI571) regardless of whether the patient harbors a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST). In this setting, certain other tumor types lacking KIT mutations can display spurious expression that may result in diagnostic errors. Awareness of these is important.
