Breast Ultrasound-Guided Fine-Needle Aspiration: A Case Report Stressing the Sonographic Features of Benign Versus Malignant Breast Masses and the Pitfalls of Lobular Carcinoma

The patient is a 55-year-old woman who presented to the Fine-Needle Aspiration Clinic with a palpable lump in the left breast at the 8-o'clock position. The patient discovered the lump herself 2 months before. Outside diagnostic mammogram showed focal asymmetry in the left lower inner breast. Ultrasound demonstrated no corresponding cyst or mass in this area. Six-month follow-up was recommended, but the patient presented to our institution for a second opinion. Her medical history was significant for a previous wire-localized right breast excisional biopsy for a 0.6-cm mass noted on ultrasound 10 years before, which proved to be a fibrocystic change. The patient also had a history of smoking, 5 years of oral contraceptive use, and a father with lung cancer at age 70 years.
