WHO classification of tumours of haematopoietic and lymphoid tissues in 2008: an overview.

The 4th edition of the WHO classification of haemo-poetic and lymphoid tumours is a joint project of the European Association for Haematopathology and the Society of Hematopathology, reviewing and updating the previous 3rd edition published in 2001, which was the first worldwide consensus classification on hae-matological tumours. The most recent update began in 2006, and was led by a steering committee composed of 8 members from both societies, who proposed the diseases to include in the classification along with the referring experts that should be responsible for each section. As with the previous edition, two clinical advisory committees - one for myeloid neoplasms and acute leukaemias and one for lymphoid tumours - were established, including clinicians to assure the clinical utility of the classification.
