Mitsubishi Chemical reports huge rise in earnings, Sumitomo Chemical swings to proft

Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings, the parent of Mitsubishi Chemical, says its net profts increased by 73.4% in the full fscal year, ended 31 March, compared with the previous fscal year, to ￥32.2 bil- lion ($316 million). Full-year sales increased 13.3%, to ￥3.49 trillion. Operating profts for the fscal year increased by 22.4%, to ￥110.4 billion. Fourth-quarter fgures have not been disclosed. During the fscal year, overseas demand recovered mildly in the company's performance products and industrial materials seg- ments despite weak economic recovery in China and Europe, Mitsubishi says. Demand, strengthened by a better environment for exports in Japan, recovered gradually there. This environment was brought about by monetary and fscal policies that caused the Japanese currency to depreciate, Mitsubishi says.
