Taiwan to investigate LCY Chemical Corp. in propylene explosions

Taiwanese authorities said on Saturday that they are investigating the role of LCY Chemical Corp. (Taipei) in the series of explosions at Kaohsiung on Thursday that killed 28 people and injured 302. Two people from the local fire department are still missing. The local government's Environmental Protection Bureau said on 2 August the explosions were triggered by a leak in an underground pipeline used by LCY Chemical Corp. to obtain propylene from one of its suppliers. It said LCY had failed to notify authorities of problems with a propylene pipeline in the area despite being aware of irregularities in deliveries through the pipeline that night. This caused delays in the government's response to the disaster, the officials said. LCY chairman Bowei Lee apologized at a press conference on Sunday, saying the company will fully comply with government instructions in the investigation. But he did not admit that LCY was the cause of the explosions.
