Monsanto says it has submitted a refuge-in-the-bag option for its Genuity VT Double PRO corn for registration with the U.S. EPA. If approved, the corn would also reduce refuge requirements to 5%, from average refuges that range between 20%-50%, generating significant yield benefits for farmers, Monsanto says. Refuge requirements were put in place by the EPA in 1999 to help prevent corn insect pests from developing resistance to Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) gene technology, according to the National Corn Growers Association (Chesterfield, MO).
