Sabic, Shell Chemicals cancel POSM, polyol plans

Sabic and Shell Chemicals have called of plans to build a major propylene oxide–styrene monomer (POSM) and polyols complex in Saudi Arabia, CW has learned. Graham van’t Hof, executive v.p. at Shell Chemicals, has confrmed to CW that Sabic has decided to halt the POSM and polyols development but says each company is working on other possible projects in Saudi Arabia. Sabic and Shell announced plans in November 2012 to expand their partnership through the companies’ existing, equally owned joint venture Saudi Petrochemical Co. (Sadaf; Al Jubail). Shell had been expected to provide its tech- nology for each plant. The polyols unit was to have comprised a full range of products, including specialty and elastomeric polyols, and use propylene oxide from the POSM plant as feedstock.
