With earthquake-hit Japan accounting for about 5.5% of global capacity of ethylene, global prices of the chemical are expected to rise while prices of naphtha, which is used to make 90% of the country's ethylene, may fall. This is according to a report by US-based Alembic Global Advisors, which says that Japan accounts for 4.1% PE and 5.5% PP capacity globally, with about 2 to 4% of both PE and PP output exported.
