When Fritz Hofmann invented the first process for manufacturing synthetic rubber 100 years ago, it represented a quantum leap in polymer chemistry. Hofmann's invention laid the foundation for mobilising the world as we know it today. What's more, a great many of the past century's technical innovations would have been impossible without this synthetic material. It covers many different applications, taking in everything from automotive engineering and the tyre industry to energy generation, medicine, sports and aerospace engineering.
