Mention"plastic cars"and toys come to mind? Think again. The switch to plastic parts in the building of vehicles is anything but child's play with more and more polymers being specially developed for this specific purpose.Whereas the plastics content in cars in the 1970s was about 5%,today it is 15% and industry stalwarts say it will be 20% by 2012.Today,the plastics solutions that are commonly found in cars range from dashboards, steering wheels and seats to airbag and damping systems. And under the hood,it is a different story altogether for temperature resistant plastics in the engine, cable sheathing, gaskets as well as the fuel pump and air-intake manifold.
