Storeys to pay ￡400k in health and safety ruling

Storeys Industrial Products has been fined ￡550,000 and forced to pay ￡60,000 costs after one of its employees was seriously injured in an explosion at its PVC sheet plant. John Balls, 55, suffered 40 degree burns and was blinded in one eye at the Brantham, Suffolk, plant on 29 November 2005. Chelmsford Crown Court heard how the explosion was caused by inappropriate handling and use of dried nitrocellulose and ruled last week that the company had breached safety regulations.
