I read with great interest the article by Ishida and colleagues, "Myotomy of the Levator Labii Supe-rioris Muscle and Lip Repositioning: A Combined Approach for the Correction of Gummy Smile," published recently in the Journal. The subject of treatment approaches for the correction of "gummy smiles" whose cause is increased muscular function (increased contraction) of the upper lip has been an issue for at least three decades, and the search for treatment modalities with which to achieve a beautiful smile and improvement of our patients' facial aesthetics is never ending.
