Johnson & Johnson sued over contraceptive patch

A number of women have filed lawsuits against Johnson & Johnson (J&J) over its contraceptive patch, Ortho Evra, after they were diagnosed with severe thromboses, pulmonary emboli, and other conditions. Three Texan women have alleged that Ortho Evra's manufacturer, J&J subsidiary Ortho-McNeii, should be held responsible for the sale of a dangerous drug. The patients, all in their 30s, filed lawsuits in US District Courts for the Northern and Eastern Districts of Texas. None of the women concerned had a history of blood clots before using the patch, but they must now take anticoagulant drugs to prevent future thromboses. One of the women will be required to take blood thinners for the rest of her life. All three were hospitalised as a result of their medical problems.
