On October 11,2007, as he was turning 71, German scientist Gerhard Ertl received the best birthday present he could wish for: the Nobel Prize. Ertl, now Emeritus Professor at Berlin's Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society, won the prestigious 1.5 million award for his groundbreaking studies on the molecular mechanisms of reactions that occur on surfaces. His work has helped explain how fuel cells produce energy without pollution, how catalytic converters clean up car exhaust, and how fertilizers are made.
