Nearly 800 billion dollars in economic stimulus funds are now flowing from the federal government for infrastructure and other projects meant to help the U.S. economy get back on track. The United Steelworkers worked hard in Washington, D.C., when the bill was being debated to make sure that a Buy American provision was included. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act signed by President Obama requires that American-made steel is used in infrastructure projects. But the USW didn't stop there. In nearly 1,000 cities, towns, villages, counties, states and other localities across the United States, USW members introduced resolutions to help ensure that tax dollars aren't used to boost the economies of countries like China and India, where companies unfairly subsidize their industries, disregard environmental and safety regulations and manipulate currency.
