Amniotic Membrane Transplantation for Correcting Ocular Motility Restriction After Pterygium Surgery

Purpose: To describe the surgical technique of amniotic membrane transplantation over the medial rectus muscle (MRM) in a case of ocular motility restriction after multiple pterygium surgeries. Methods: The surgical procedure involved excision of epibulbar fibrovascular tissue to the bare sclera and recession of conjunctiva to the fornix while clearing adhesions around the MRM. Sutureless amniotic membrane transplantation with fibrin glue was used to cover the muscle, to line the fornix, and to cover bare sclera. Results: Postoperatively, the patient recovered smooth and stable ocular surface, deep fornix, and full ocular motility without recurrence. Conclusions: Amniotic membrane transplantation can be considered in the prevention and treatment of ocular motility restriction after pterygium surgery.
