A modified two-stage perineal rectosigmoidectomy for incarcerated rectal prolapse

It is well known that incarcerated rectal prolapse requires emergency surgery. To date, treatment of the acute incarcerated or strangulated rectal prolapse is still a big challenge. Traditionally, a single-stage perineal rectosigmoidectomy is performed to treat patients with reducible rectal prolapse. However, it has been reported that about 2–6 % of elective patients treated with perineal rectosigmoidectomy still have anastomotic complications [1–3]. Furthermore, if the patients with acute incarcerated or strangulated rectal prolapse are treated with routine perineal rectosigmoidectomy, a much higher percentage (25 %) developed anastomotic leak in the immediate postoperative period [2].
