Complications in the Treatment of LI Burst Fractures

Burst fractures of the thoracolumbar spine can be managed effectively by a number of different approaches. In this article, each approach and the complications associated with that particular approach and their avoidance are discussed.Dorsal approaches to the thoracolumbar spine frequently are favored by spine surgeons. The anatomy is familiar, and there is low risk of vascular or visceral injury. In the setting of spine trauma, the ability to avoid entry into a potentially injured thoracic or peritoneal cavity is particularly advantageous. Posterior fixation can be performed with minimal operative time, and there is no need for an access surgeon. A cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak, if encountered, is not difficult to treat. Finally, it enables 'three-column' stabilization from a single approach.
