摘要

B-Type natriuretic peptide (BNP) is one of five (1) members of the family of natriuretic peptides and plays a vital physiological role in fluid volume homeostasis. BNP, a 32 amino acid polypeptide with a 22 minute in vivo half-Life, is synthesized as prepro-BNP in the ventricular myocyte. In response to myocyte stretch, the prepro-BNP is cleaved to pro-BNP, which is in turn cleaved to form biologically active BNP (the C-terminal fragment) and inactive NT-pro-BNP (the N-terminal fragment). Both BNP and NT-pro-BNP are measurabLe in plasma and serum, and both are helpful diagnostic and prognostic tools for congestive heart failure (CHF) and other cardiovascular disease.
