Lazaro Gotloib (Figure 1) was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, 27 August 1936. He obtained his medical degree in 1961 at the Faculty of Medicine, Buenos Aires. Still very young, he applied for a fellowship in Europe, and in 1964, he became a fellow in nephrology at the Department of Nephrology, Hospital Necker, Paris, France, underthe guidance of professor Jean Hamburger. He spent two years in Paris, during which time he learned the basic principles of clinical nephrology. At the same time, he learned to speak fluid French.
