EARTHQUAKE AFFECTS MITSUI PLANTS

Tokyo - Operations at Japanese petrochemicals group Mitsui Chemicals Inc. have not yet returned to normal following the 11 March earthquake and tsunami in Japan, while chemical company Tosoh reports that operating rates at some plants may have increased. Mitsui said 11 April that operations in the north-east of Japan are still being adversely affected. The firm said damage has been assessed at its Kashima Works in Ibaraki Prefecture, where it operates a 120 kilotonnes per annum (ktpa) TDI unit, but Mitsui did not say when it expected production to restart. Press reports said that the plant would remain closed until June, for scheduled maintenance.
